Champions!!

On Sunday, February 26, the Rattlers rallied from a 1-0 deficit only 1:32 into the 1st period to defeat the Warren Blue Devils for the second time in six days to win the 2012 Metro League Founders Cup! 

After Kristin Chivers scored her 3rd in a row against the Rattlers in two games, the Rattlers buckled down on defense and kept pressing on offense.  Senior Lorissa Sernus jammed in a rebound with 1:53 left in the 2nd period to tie the game at 1.  In the third period, junior Marissa Maxfield scored her ninth of the playoffs at 2:03 of the frame in another goalmouth scramble, to put the Rattlers in front 2-1.  The Rattlers had to kill 3 penalties in the third, but did so and allowed only 5 shots on goalie Regi Engel in the period.  A huge crowd got to count down the seconds to :00 as the Rattlers win their second Founders Cup in three years by a score of 2-1 and our eight seniors join the select group of athletes that can say “I won my last high school hockey game”.

 

 

Rattlers split in Erie, finish year with big win

The Rattlers ventured to Erie, PA to take on the Erie Lady Lions 19Us, the defending Mid-Am District Tier-II champions.  The Rattlers were supposed to play Saturday against the Amherst (NY) Knights 19s, but they unexpectedly made it to the NY state championships and couldn’t make it, so the Lions and Rattlers played a double-header.  Lions coach Yevet Anderson (the Mid-Am Womens & Girls Division chair) sang the Star-Spangled Banner on Saturday and the games were on.  The Rattlers dropped a 6-4 decision on Saturday on an empty-netter, but came back huge on Sunday and defeated the Lions 6-2 to close out the high school careers of the “Original 8” with a win and make it a very happy bus ride home.  More details in the Game Summaries.

The Rattlers - Year 4

The Rattlers are the first and only Girls High School Ice Hockey team in the South & Southwestern suburban area, having made their debut in the 2008-09 season.  The Rattlers compete in the Girls Division of the Chicago Metropolitan High School Hockey League (CMHSHL).

The Rattlers are a "combined high school" team registered with AHAI, the Amateur Hockey Association of Illinois.  For 2011-2012, the Rattlers are represented by players from the following high schools:  Andrew, Marist, Homewood-Flossmoor, Mother McAuley, Sandburg, Shepard, Stagg, Lincoln-Way Central & Oak Lawn.

 

In just three years, Rattlers have garnered many individual honors, including eight AHAI All-State selections; a Blackhawks Alumni Assn. All-State selection; a Metro League Service Award and the AHAI HS Coach of the Year in 2010/11.  Team Honors include the Metro Founders Cup championship in 2010, and the IHOA Sportmanship Award in 2011.

The Rattlers have helped move an alum to ACHA Womens college club hockey and anticipate at least a few more players moving on to the ACHA or NCAA after the 2011-2012 season.
